Philodendron ‚Spiritus Sancti‘ - Care

Location & Light
The Holy Spirit Philodendron prefers bright to moderately bright light, but it does not tolerate direct sunlight, as the leaves will burn quickly. A spot by an east or west window with plenty of indirect light is ideal. Overall, it is not overly demanding when it comes to light: too little light will lead to lanky growth with smaller leaves, and too much direct sun will cause burns. There is quite a bit of leeway between these extremes.
Pour
Water again only when the top half of the substrate has dried out – it should remain evenly moist, but never wet. Waterlogging is the most common care mistake here and quickly promotes root rot, which is why a pot with good drainage (some growers even drill additional holes in the sides of the pot) is advisable. This is usually the case about once a week during the growing season, and less often in winter. The finger test is still the most reliable method instead of a fixed rhythm.
Fertilize
The Holy Spirit is undemanding when it comes to fertilizing – during the growth phase, one application per month with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer is usually sufficient; it generally doesn't need more. Exactly how much depends on the specific product and its concentration – it's best to follow the dosage instructions on the packaging rather than a general rule. If the plant is only placed by a window, you can reduce or completely pause fertilization in autumn and winter because growth slows down due to the weaker light. However, if a plant lamp provides sufficient daylight hours, the growth activity remains relatively stable even in winter – in that case, fertilization can continue at the usual, already sparse rhythm instead of being further reduced.
We consciously alternate between different fertilizers for our own plants – currently including COMPO COMPLETE, Foliage Focus, Liquid Gold Leaf, and Hesi TNT-Complex, supplemented with Hesi Root Complex, Hesi PowerZyme, and CalMag as needed.
Substrate
It should be loose and well-draining – an aroid mix of, for example, soil, orchid bark, and perlite has proven effective; some charcoal can also provide additional structure. Heavy, compacting soil promotes waterlogging and thus root rot, so it's better to use something coarser rather than too fine.
Humidity & Temperature
The Spiritus Sancti is surprisingly undemanding in this regard: It does not have extreme requirements for humidity; more important than a high humidity level is that the humidity remains reasonably constant rather than fluctuating widely. Most owners describe levels between 50 and 70 % as sufficient, so a terrarium is not a requirement here. Misting increases humidity only slightly and for just a few minutes; at the same time, it keeps the leaves damp, which can promote fungal problems if air circulation is poor. A humidifier or a gravel tray filled with water is more reliable in this regard. When it comes to temperature, consistency is also more important than a specific value: 18 to 27 °C is ideal, and the plant should be kept away from significant fluctuations and drafts as much as possible.
Growth & Support
In nature, Spiritus Sancti grows hemiepiphyte: It starts low to the ground and climbs tree trunks over time. Therefore, at home, a sphagnum moss pole is worthwhile sooner or later, allowing the aerial roots to anchor – this is how the characteristic, elongated leaves become significantly larger than without support. Under good conditions, it grows surprisingly fast: 1 to 3 new leaves per month are realistic during the growth phase. Mature leaves can reach 50 cm or more with optimal care.
Good to know
Like most philodendrons, the Spiritus Sancti also contains calcium oxalate crystals and is irritating to pets and children if consumed – best to place out of reach.
The Spiritus Sancti originates from a tiny region around Domingos Martins in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo and was at times considered practically extinct due to poaching in its natural habitat. Only modern in-vitro propagation has made this plant more accessible to collectors – those who cultivate it, in a way, contribute to the preservation of the species rather than taking from the wild.
