Syngonium ‚Orm Nak‘ - Care

The Orm Nak likes it bright, but it doesn't tolerate direct sunlight well – the sensitive, colored leaf areas burn quite quickly. A spot by an east or west window with plenty of indirect light is ideal. The color intensity depends strongly on the light exposure: the brighter the location, the stronger the pink-red coloration. If it's too dark, the colors fade, growth slows down, and the shoots noticeably stretch out in search of more light – a reliable sign that a brighter spot would be beneficial.

Water when the top layer of soil (roughly the top 2-3 cm) has dried out. The Orm Nak tolerates neither complete dryness nor waterlogging well – its roots are sensitive to too much moisture. During the growing season, this is usually the case every 7 to 10 days, while in winter, the finger test is sufficient every 10 to 14 days. It's worth being a little careful with your watering: it doesn't particularly like hard, cold tap water; room-temperature still or filtered water is a better choice.

During the growth phase, feeding every 2 to 4 weeks with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer is usually sufficient. The exact frequency depends on the specific product and its concentration – it's best to follow the dosage instructions on the packaging rather than a general rule. Without artificial light, meaning with natural window light only, you can skip fertilizing in autumn and winter because the weaker light naturally slows down growth. However, if a plant lamp provides sufficient brightness throughout the day, the growth activity remains more stable – in this case, you can continue fertilizing as usual without a winter break.

We consciously alternate between different fertilizers for our own plants – currently including COMPO COMPLETE, Foliage Focus, Liquid Gold Leaf, and Hesi TNT-Complex, supplemented with Hesi Root Complex, Hesi PowerZyme, and CalMag as needed.

It should be loose and well-draining – an aroid mix of e.g. soil, coco chunks, perlite, and some pine bark has proven effective. Heavy, compacted soil favors waterlogging and thus root rot.

As a tropical plant, it likes humidity—the Orm Nak thrives particularly well at humidity levels above 50 %, which is why it’s also well-suited for the bathroom. However, it can also tolerate normal indoor air conditions. Spraying the plant barely increases humidity—and only for a few minutes—while leaving the leaves damp, which can create a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria, especially with poor air circulation. An air humidifier, a bowl of water with pebbles, or a cluster of plants, on the other hand, increase humidity more reliably and over the long term without wetting the leaves. Temperatures between 18 and 27 °C are ideal; the temperature should not drop below 15 °C for extended periods, and drafts should be avoided.

The Orm Nak is naturally a climbing plant and can be grown upwards on a climbing aid (moss or coir pole) as well as in a hanging pot. When grown on a support, the leaves tend to become larger and more robust. It grows quite quickly and can form long shoots over time; regular pruning keeps it compact and bushy. A characteristic typical of Syngonium: young leaves are still simple and arrow-shaped, while more mature leaves will grow back with time, becoming significantly more lobed and divided – this is a normal maturation process and not a cultivation error.
