Alocasia ‚Polly‘ Aurea - Care
Location & Light
The Polly Aurea needs plenty of brightness to maintain its strong yellow variegation, but cannot tolerate direct midday sun – this burns both the dark and light areas of the leaves equally. A spot with plenty of indirect light, near an east or west window, is well-suited; mild morning or evening sun is usually unproblematic after slow acclimatization. If there is a lack of light, it will form thin, unstable stems and the leaves will lose their contrast.
Pour
The Polly Aurea stores moisture in its thick stems, but is still sensitive to waterlogging – when in doubt, it's better to water a little less than too generously. It's best to water as soon as the top layer of soil has dried out, usually once or twice a week in summer. If it doesn't get enough water, the leaves will visibly droop, but will recover quickly afterward. Room-temperature, low-calcium water is best tolerated; excess water in the cachepot should be removed after watering.
Fertilize
As a heavy feeder, Polly Aurea can tolerate fertilization with every or every other watering during the growing season, but only when highly diluted (a quarter to a maximum of half the recommended amount) – due to the variegated, less chlorophyll-rich leaf areas, it's best to stay at the lower end of the dosage. As a rough guideline for Alocasias in general, a pH of about 5.5 to 6.5 and a rather low 1.0 to 1.5 mS/cm are considered appropriate, as the genus is known to be salt-sensitive. Stick to the manufacturer's instructions on the respective packaging for precise dosing; the plant does not tolerate over-fertilization well. If the Polly Aurea is only placed by the window in autumn and winter, the light becomes weaker, and fertilization should be reduced accordingly or paused; however, if it grows year-round under a sufficiently strong plant lamp, the usual rhythm can be maintained without further reduction.
We consciously alternate between different fertilizers for our own plants – currently including COMPO COMPLETE, Foliage Focus, Liquid Gold Leaf, and Hesi TNT-Complex, supplemented with Hesi Root Complex, Hesi PowerZyme, and CalMag as needed.
Substrate
The substrate should be loose, rich in humus, and well-draining – a high-quality aroid mix of potting soil, pine bark, and perlite has proven effective. A drainage layer at the bottom of the pot also helps to prevent waterlogging. The Polly Aurea also prefers to be in a slightly tighter pot than other Alocasias – a significantly oversized pot is more likely to cause the substrate to remain wet for too long.
Humidity & Temperature
The humidity should be at least 60 %, but Polly Aurea also responds well to higher levels with more vigorous growth. Normal indoor air in winter—often only 30 to 45 %—isn’t enough for it in the long run; you’ll notice this by brown, dry leaf tips and edges. A humidifier or a bowl of pebbles is the most reliable solution here; you should avoid regular misting, as moisture left on the leaves promotes fungal and bacterial growth. The ideal temperature range is between 18 and 27 °C; it should not be exposed to temperatures consistently below 15 °C or cold drafts.
Growth & Form
The Polly Aurea grows from a tuber into a compact, upright plant, remaining significantly smaller than many other Alocasias. The occasional death of an older leaf as a new one appears is normal and not a cause for concern. Regularly rotating the pot ensures even growth, as the leaves will otherwise orient themselves one-sidedly towards the light.
Good to know
Like all Alocasias, Polly Aurea also contains calcium oxalate crystals and is irritating to pets and children if ingested – best to place it out of reach.
Botanically, Polly is a compact cultivar of Alocasia ‚Amazonica‘ (a cross between Alocasia sanderiana and Alocasia longiloba), recognizable by its dark green, arrowhead-shaped leaves with prominent silvery-white veins. The Aurea variant additionally displays yellow to cream variegation in speckles or larger patches.
Regularly checking the undersides of leaves is worthwhile, as spider mites can appear, especially during dry, heated air in winter.
