Alocasia venusta – Care
Location & Light
The Venusta originates from the sun-drenched undergrowth of Borneo's limestone forests and therefore prefers bright conditions, but without direct sun for extended periods of the day. A spot with plenty of indirect light, such as near an east or west window, is well-suited; it can usually tolerate short periods of mild morning sun without issues. If there is insufficient light, it will become increasingly leggy and grow noticeably slower.
Pour
The Venusta grows in limestone, where the roots receive moisture and plenty of air simultaneously. This principle is best replicated by watering in small amounts but regularly, and consistently avoiding waterlogging. It's best to water as soon as the top layer of substrate feels dry; the root ball should never dry out completely. Room-temperature, low-lime water is best tolerated, as the plant is sensitive to hard tap water. In autumn and winter, when growth slows down, watering is reduced significantly.
Fertilize
As a compact species, Venusta grows more slowly than many large-leaved Alocasias and therefore requires less fertilizer – usually one application every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season with a highly diluted liquid fertilizer (one quarter to a maximum of half the recommended amount). As a rough guideline, Alocasias generally prefer a pH of about 5.5 to 6.5 and rather low levels of 1.0 to 1.5 mS/cm, as the genus is considered salt-sensitive. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the respective packaging for precise dosing; the plant does not tolerate over-fertilization well. If Venusta is only placed by a window in autumn and winter, the light becomes weaker and fertilization is reduced accordingly or paused; if, on the other hand, it grows year-round under a gently set plant lamp, the usual, already conservative rhythm can be maintained without further reduction.
We consciously alternate between different fertilizers for our own plants – currently including COMPO COMPLETE, Foliage Focus, Liquid Gold Leaf, and Hesi TNT-Complex, supplemented with Hesi Root Complex, Hesi PowerZyme, and CalMag as needed.
Substrate
The substrate should be loose, very airy, and nevertheless moisture-retaining to come as close as possible to the natural limestone habitat of the Venusta. An aroid mix of potting soil, pine bark, and perlite works well, supplemented with some mineral material like pumice or lava if needed for additional structure and drainage. It is important that the roots never stand permanently in wet substrate.
Humidity & Temperature
The humidity should be between 60 and 85 % so that the Venusta can fully develop its firm, leathery leaf structure. Normal indoor air in winter, often only 30 to 45 %, is not sufficient for it in the long run—a greenhouse, display case, or plant cabinet with a humidifier is the most reliable solution here. You should avoid regularly misting the leaves, as standing moisture promotes fungal and bacterial growth. The ideal temperature range is between 18 and 27 °C; it should not be exposed to temperatures consistently below 15 °C or drafts.
Growth & Form
The Venusta grows from a tuber into a compact plant and eventually forms several shoots that grow out bushily. Its narrow leaves are entirely peltate, meaning the petiole attaches to the center of the underside of the leaf instead of the edge – a typical identifying feature of this species. It is normal for an old leaf to die off as soon as a new one appears, and there is no cause for concern.
Good to know
Like all Alocasias, the Venusta contains calcium oxalate crystals and is irritating to pets and children if ingested – best to place it out of reach.
Botanically, *Venusta* originates from a very limited area in northern Sarawak, Borneo, around the well-known Niah Caves, where it grows on limestone in humid forests. Its narrow, dark green to slightly bluish shimmering leaves with a firm, leathery texture clearly distinguish it from most large-leaved Alocasias.
Regularly checking the undersides of leaves is worthwhile, as spider mites and aphids can appear, especially in dry, heated air during winter.
