Anthurium ‚King of Clarinervium Sulanjana‘ – Care

Anthurium 'King of Clarinervium Sulanjana' mit großem, samtig dunkelgrünem Herzblatt und markant hellen, kontrastreichen Blattadern
The following information comes from personal experience and the comparison of several independent German and English sources. Since location, light, and room climate vary slightly in every home, this information serves as a guideline and not as a rigid specification.
Location & Light

A bright spot with plenty of indirect light best highlights the high-contrast white veining of this hybrid. Placing it one to two meters from an east or west window works well. Direct sun quickly scorches the velvety leaf surface, while too little light makes growth noticeably tougher and the veins lose their vibrancy. A general guideline for velvety-leaved Anthuriums is approximately 20 to 100 µmol/m²/s PAR (PPFD), which corresponds to a DLI of about 1 to 4 mol/m²/day.

Pour

The top 2 to 3 cm of the substrate may dry out, but it should not dry out completely – this hybrid thrives best when kept evenly slightly moist. It tolerates low-lime, preferably aged water better than hard tap water. It does not tolerate waterlogging, so always pour off excess water from the saucer.

Fertilize

During the growth phase, a well-diluted liquid fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks is sufficient. The pH range of approximately 5.5 to 6.5 and an electrical conductivity of the irrigation water of roughly 1.0 to 1.5 mS/cm are considered guidelines for the genus. If the plant is only placed by the window in autumn and winter, fertilizing is done less frequently or not at all due to the weaker light; however, with year-round bright plant lamp lighting, fertilization can continue at the usual rhythm.

We consciously alternate between different fertilizers for our own plants – currently including COMPO COMPLETE, Foliage Focus, Liquid Gold Leaf, and Hesi TNT-Complex, supplemented with Hesi Root Complex, Hesi PowerZyme, and CalMag as needed.

Substrate

A coarse, well-draining substrate of potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite best suits this lithophytic hybrid. A pot with good drainage is important, and repotting is usually done in spring as soon as the pot becomes noticeably too small.

Humidity & Temperature

This hybrid prefers noticeably higher humidity than average; levels between 60 and 80 % make the leaves look their best. Instead of misting—the effect is short-lived, and damp leaves can promote fungal growth—a humidifier ensures more consistent results. The ideal temperature range is between 18 and 27 °C; the plant does not tolerate temperatures consistently below 15 °C well.

Growth & Form

As a self-heading rosette plant, this hybrid grows upright without any climbing ambitions, reaching a height of about 60 to 80 cm as a houseplant. Under good conditions, individual leaves can grow over 40 cm long, making them significantly larger than those of the pure Anthurium clarinervium. It does not require climbing support. With window-only cultivation in autumn and winter, growth noticeably slows due to weaker light; however, with year-round bright plant lamp lighting, growth remains largely consistent.

Good to know

‚King of Clarinervium Sulanjana‘ is a cross between Anthurium clarinervium and Anthurium sulanjana. The clarinervium parent species originates from the limestone forests of the Mexican state of Chiapas, where it attaches its roots directly to rocks. Minerals from the rock are discussed as a possible reason for the special velvety sheen of the leaves. Compared to pure clarinervium, this hybrid is overall more robust and larger-leaved.

Like all aroids, this Anthurium also contains calcium oxalate crystals and is irritating to pets and children if ingested – best to place out of reach.
