Syngonium ‚T25‘ – Care
Our own Syngonium T25 – your specimen may vary slightly in variegation as each leaf is individually patterned.
Location & Light
The T25 likes it bright, but it can't tolerate direct sun – it quickly burns the sensitive white areas of the leaves. A spot with plenty of indirect light is ideal. A special feature that distinguishes this variety from other variegated Syngoniums: The white-translucent pattern on the T25 is largely genetically determined and does not become more intense with more light, as is the case with many other colorful varieties. Sufficient brightness remains important nonetheless – if the location is too dark, the plant grows slower, stretches out un attractively, and new leaves come in paler.
Pour
Water thoroughly once the top layer of substrate (roughly the top 2–3 cm) has dried out, and let any excess water drain completely afterward. The T25 does not tolerate constantly wet soil well, as this quickly leads to root problems. This is usually the case once a week during the growing season; in winter, the finger test is sufficient every 10 to 14 days. It doesn't particularly like hard, cold tap water – stale or filtered water at room temperature is a better choice.
Fertilize
Because it grows quite slowly as a dwarf form anyway, the T25 doesn't need strong fertilization – one dose every 4 to 6 weeks with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer is perfectly sufficient during the growth phase. Overly ambitious fertilizing brings more risks than benefits here: Since the plant grows slowly, it can process excess nutrient salts less well, which can lead to root damage more quickly than with more vigorously growing Syngonium varieties. In winter, when growth activity naturally decreases on the windowsill, it is enough to completely stop fertilizing. If, on the other hand, the plant is kept under a grow light with sufficient daylight hours, it remains more active – then fertilization can continue at its already moderate pace instead of taking an extra break.
We consciously alternate between different fertilizers for our own plants – currently including COMPO COMPLETE, Foliage Focus, Liquid Gold Leaf, and Hesi TNT-Complex, supplemented with Hesi Root Complex, Hesi PowerZyme, and CalMag as needed.
Substrate
It should be loose, airy, and well-draining – an aroid mix with a high proportion of coarse bark and perlite has proven effective, ideally supplemented with some coco coir and a small amount of charcoal to bind excess moisture. Heavy, compacting soil promotes waterlogging and thus root rot.
Humidity & Temperature
A relative humidity of 50 to 70 % promotes growth and leaf quality, but normal indoor air conditions are also tolerable. Spraying barely increases humidity and only for a few minutes; at the same time, it leaves the leaves damp, which can create a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria, especially when air circulation is poor. An air humidifier, a bowl of water with pebbles, or a cluster of plants, on the other hand, increase humidity more reliably and sustainably without wetting the leaves. In terms of temperature, the T25 is quite sensitive to frost: 18 to 25 °C is ideal; temperatures should not drop below 12 °C for extended periods, and it also does not tolerate drafts or heated air well.
Growth & Support
As the name „Dwarf“ suggests, the T25 is naturally more compact and slower growing than most other Syngonium varieties. A climbing aid is therefore not strictly necessary, but the plant will become more bushy and upright on a small stake or stick. As with all Syngoniums, the leaf shape changes with age: young leaves are simple arrow-shaped, while more mature shoots develop more lobed leaves.
Good to know
Like most arums, T25 also contains calcium oxalate crystals and is irritating to pets and children if ingested – best to place it out of reach. The plant sap can also irritate the skin, so gloves are recommended when cutting or repotting.
The T25, also known as „Dwarf Variegata,“ is a compact variety of Syngonium podophyllum. The name „T25“ is purely a breeding designation with no botanical significance – like many collector plants, the abbreviated name has simply become established in trade.
