Philodendron ‚Burle Marx Fantasy‘ – Care

The Burle Marx Fantasy likes bright to partial shade, but cannot tolerate direct sun, as the leaves will burn quickly. A spot with plenty of indirect light, slightly away from the window, works well. Compared to many other aroids, it can also handle somewhat shadier locations, but will grow slower and produce smaller leaves there.

Water only when the top layer of the substrate (roughly the top 2–3 cm) has dried out. The Fantasy is quite susceptible to root rot, so when in doubt, it's better to water a little less than too much. During the growth phase, this is usually the case about every 7 to 10 days. The finger test remains the most reliable method instead of a fixed rhythm.

During the growth phase, one application every 3 to 4 weeks with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer is usually sufficient. The exact amount depends on the specific product and its concentration – it's best to follow the dosage instructions on the packaging rather than a general rule. Since the Fantasy grows quite slowly anyway, fertilizing too often will cause more damage here than with vigorously growing species. If the plant is placed only by the window, you can significantly reduce fertilization in autumn and winter because growth decreases due to weaker light. However, if a plant lamp with sufficient daily hours is used, growth activity remains relatively stable even in winter – in this case, fertilization can continue at the usual, already restrained rhythm, instead of being further reduced.

We consciously alternate between different fertilizers for our own plants – currently including COMPO COMPLETE, Foliage Focus, Liquid Gold Leaf, and Hesi TNT-Complex, supplemented with Hesi Root Complex, Hesi PowerZyme, and CalMag as needed.

It should be loose and well-draining, yet still be able to retain some moisture – an aroid mix of e.g. soil, orchid bark, and perlite has proven successful. Heavy, compacted soil encourages waterlogging and thus root rot.

A humidity level of 40 to 70 % promotes healthy growth and more attractive foliage, but normal indoor air conditions are generally well tolerated. Spraying increases humidity only slightly and for just a few minutes; at the same time, it leaves the leaves damp, which can create a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria, especially when air circulation is poor. An air humidifier, a pebble tray filled with water, or a cluster of plants, on the other hand, increase humidity more reliably and over the long term without wetting the leaves. It should not be kept in a place that is too cool; it does not thrive at temperatures consistently below 18 °C—the ideal range is 18 to 27 °C.

A climbing aid (moss pole) is almost indispensable for this plant: Without support, the characteristic, teardrop-shaped leaves remain tiny – sometimes only 2 to 3 cm long. Climbing a moss pole to which the aerial roots can attach, they grow significantly larger and can reach up to 10 cm. The Fantasy grows very slowly overall, this is normal and not a care mistake – patience is required here.
